Nervous Breakdown
Nervous Breakdown is an old fashioned term that was used to describe mysterious symptoms of being unable to function but physically appearing healthy and well.

These days it is understood much better in that it is a type of reaction to depression and anxiety and for some, can mean that they barely able to get through each day without continual feelings of fear just from moving and for some, they appear on the outside to be doing just fine but internally they feel as if they are terrified for no reason.

The symptoms can look the same as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but sometimes the mystery is the apparent lack of traumatic stress.

Although the symptoms can differ in different people, the common say when their nerves are frayed and are experiencing what used to be called nervous breakdown are;

-
I cannot stop ruminating
-
I'm in a state of fear all the time
-
I struggle to sleep or stay asleep
-
I sometimes have panic or anxiety attacks for no reason
-
I can't work out what has caused this
-
I struggle to do normal life like I used to
-
No matter how much I try to desribe it, no-one seems to understand what's going on (sometimes including Doctors)
-
It's not just Anxiety
-
It's not just depression
-
It looks like PTSD symptoms but Ive had no traumatic stress
-
By body just feels awful
-
My eyes are sensitive, often wear sunglasses on cloudy days
-
I have some medication to take, just in case it's needed
-
I have moments where I feel normal, but they're rare.
-
I've gone from place to place looking for some help to fix this.
-
Sometimes I come over all weird, wobbly.
-
I have unusual vivid dreams
-
I have experienced some strange sensations of being slightly outside of my body.
-
When I research what this could be, many things tick the boxes, but there's always something missing, nothing is ever quite right.
-
I feel as if I am being haunted
-
I am not normally like this, I don't understand what's happened.
-
People in my life are bored of hearing about my problem.

It is accepted that the best treatment for Depression and Anxiety or Nervous Breakdown is prescribed medication and talking therapies together. In therapy, it appears that the person having the breakdown finally gets what is needed when they had no idea what they needed.

I have worked with many people who are struggling with Depression, Anxiety and Nervous breakdowns who normally did not have a tendancy to be depressed or indeed anxious previously.

Of course stress can cause mental health difficulties but in many cases, people are managing so much and so well that it is often overlooked that actually, the person is not feeling very happy despite the feeling that they perhaps should be.

Other times people recognise that they are stressed and simply don't know what to do about it.
Counselling and Psychotherapy can help gain balance, reduce anxiety or low mood and increase coping skills.
