Assertiveness (which is not the same as aggressiveness) can help the client grow confidence.
Rehearsal of simple examples between sessions can be helpful. Consider the following:

1. Do you avoid conflict at all costs even if the issue is important?

2. Do you feel that things matter more to others than to you

3. Do you find it difficult to say no to determined salespeople?

4. Do you always return faulty goods and complain?

5. If someone jumps their place in the queue would you let them?

6. Are people’s feelings more important than the principle of the matter?

7. Do you find yourself doing other people’s work in order to meet the deadline?

8. Do you let your partner make all the shopping decisions?

9. Would you drive around for miles before asking for directions?

10. Do you find it hard to say “No” to requests for help?

11. Do you not ask for advice in case you seem stupid?

12. Do you find it hard to tell your partner or friends what you want in the relationship?

13. If someone makes a mistake do you avoid mentioning it rather than drawing attention to it?
