Thank you for booking your first counselling session with me.
Below is a letter that gives you everything you’ll need to know before your first appointment, followed by an Counselling Agreement. Please reply back to show that you have read and understand and accept the agreement.

Your Appointment
Your initial session will involve a brief health assessment form and a review of issues you would like to explore or work on. It is also an opportunity to see if we seem to fit together well for going forward. Each session lasts 1 hour and is usually held weekly. After around 12 sessions, we’ll review how things are progressing and discuss whether to continue, pause, or adjust your goals or frequency.

Location
31 Welland Way, Deeping St James, PE6 8QE
You’re welcome to park on the drive. If you arrive a little early, please take a few minutes to yourself before knocking at your appointment time.
Arriving Late
Do aim to arrive on time as if you arrive late, I will still be able to see you for the remaining time, but not beyond the hour, as other clients will be scheduled afterwards. If I’m delayed for any reason, you’ll always receive your full hour — either that day or another time that suits you.
Therapy Dog
I have a large Labrador who usually is in the room during appointments and will be excited when he greets you when you arrive but will quickly settle. If you’d prefer him not to be present — or if you have any dog allergies — please let me know before your session.

Online Sessions
Face-to-face sessions are my standard practice. If travel becomes difficult due to illness or weather, we can hold a temporary online session instead.
Holidays
If either of us is away / taking annual leave then your regular appointment time can be held for you unless we make other arrangements. I’ll always let you know about my planned holidays well in advance.
Who I Work With
COUPLES
Work on relationships is done individually- I do not work with couples.
OTHER ISSUES I DO NOT WORK WITH
I may not be the best counsellor if your main focus is around:

-
Fibromyalgia (FMS)
-
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME)
-
Long Covid
-
Gender identity issues
-
Self-harm (yourself or family member)
-
Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, or ARFID
There are therapists and NHS-linked services who specialise in most of these areas and can offer more targeted support.
Ending Counselling
Therapy is open-ended and flexible. When you feel ready to finish or take a break, it is appropriate to plan an appropriate ending together.

Confidentiality may only be broken if:
-
There is clear risk of harm to yourself or another person
-
Any suspected safe-guarding issue of a vulnerable person, chid or adult.
-
If you disclose information about organized crime (such as people trafficking, County Lines)
-
Or if disclosure is required by law or court order.
Brief, anonymised notes may be kept for reference but are usually generally facts. These are securely stored and cannot be used to identify you.
Boundaries
The counselling relationship is professional.
For your wellbeing, I cannot:
-
Attend family or social events
-
Discuss you or our sessions with your relatives
