Reflexology

.. to support stress, anxiety, sleep, pain, general wellness

Reflexology is a therapeutic practice grounded in the concept that specific points on the feet, hands, and ears correspond to different organs and systems in the body.

These reflex points are believed to be connected to the nervous system, and stimulating them through targeted pressure may help promote healthy physiological, emotional and or physical changes.

Though reflexology is often categorized under complementary or alternative medicine, its mechanisms are increasingly being examined through a biomedical lens, particularly for its potential effects on circulation, nerve function, and pain modulation.

From a physiological standpoint, reflexology may exert its effects through the stimulation of peripheral nerves, which can influence the autonomic nervous system. This system controls involuntary functions such as heart rate, digestion, and respiratory rate. By applying pressure to reflex zones, practitioners aim to activate neural pathways that trigger relaxation responses, reduce stress hormones like cortisol, and promote homeostasis. Some studies using functional MRI have even shown changes in brain activity when certain foot areas are stimulated, suggesting measurable neurological responses.

Clinically, reflexology is most commonly used as a supportive therapy for pain management, anxiety reduction, sleep and insomnia intervention and general wellbeing..

While it should not be considered a replacement for conventional medical treatments, evidence-based reviews have found modest benefits when reflexology is integrated into holistic care plans. As research continues to evolve, reflexology remains a promising adjunct therapy with a growing foundation in neurophysiological principles.
